Beginner Sight Words Letter Match is a visual perception activity intended for children who are learning to read or for children with cognitive disabilities that works on reading and fine motor skills. Bears on Wheels by Stan and Jan Berenstain is a children's book suggested for this activity but any children's book can be used. From Bears on Wheels, common words were taken like "bear" and written on sticky notes (or note cards can be used), Then, the individual letters in those words were written on clothespins. For example, the letters "b" "e" "a" and "r" were written on individual clothes pins. Commonly used words from any children's book can be used. Then, match the individual letters to the written word on the note cards. This helps children feel comfortable with their reading skills and works on fine motor skills when clamping the clothes pins on the matching note card. Beginner Sight Words Letter Match gives the intrinsic muscles (the small muscles within the hand) a workout. These muscles are important for strength and endurance when writing and coloring. Strengthening these muscles with a pinching activity like this one helps to encourage an open web space (the space between the thumb and index finger) in the hand when holding a pencil/crayon.
