The Wheelchair Buddies, model WB2, are a wheelchair carrier system for a hand-propelled tricycle for people with lower extremity or mobility disabilities or spinal cord injury or lower extremity amputees. The Wheelchair Buddies allow a person to attach a manual wheelchair to the back of a hand-propelled tricycle so that the user can ride the cycle while transporting the wheelchair for use at the cyclist's destination. A Wheelchair Buddies set consists of a carabiner clip, a nylon strap and two of the Wheelchair Buddies modules. Model WB2 of the Wheelchair Buddies is designed to carry wheelchairs without anti-tipper slots built into the frame. A second model, WB1 (see separate entry), is available for wheelchairs with those slots. The two modules attach to the tricycle's rear crossbar, each using a nut and a screw (included). Each module has a U-shaped receptor that should be positioned pointing slightly upward and parallel to the other module. To mount the wheelchair, the wheelchair's rear wheels are removed, and the frame, without the wheels and facing the rear of the cycle, is placed so that axle crossbar fits into the receptors of the Wheelchair Buddies. The carabiner is clipped on to the support bar in back of the wheelchair's seat, and the strap is threaded through the carabiner and around the cycle's vertical bar extending between the seat and the rear crossbar. The strap is tightened to secure the wheelchair so it is angled upward with the castors at least 5 inches off of the ground (10 inches is recommended by the manufacturer). The wheelchair's rear wheels should be fastened to the wheelchair frame for transport.
