DO IT YOURSELF ENTRY --- PURPOSE: To facilitate transferring a child to a racing wheelchair. The unit has a plywood base with a pipe frame at the front to hold the front wheel; the front wheel is further secured with a Velcro strap. This stabilizes the racing wheelchair for ease of transfers in and out with one person assisting. The half-inch thick plywood base is made to the size of the wheelchair, and excess material is removed to create a lighter weight base. The pipe frame consists of one-inch metal pipe with three legs with a welded brace connecting the legs together. The brace height is a quarter-inch higher then the outside diameter of the front wheel, as this is a standard sized wheel for racing wheelchairs. The legs are held in a 1.5 inch pipe with an angle iron foot welded to it and a pin placed through it to facilitate removal of the frame from the base. Two 1.5-inch X 1.5-inch pieces of wood are fastened and run the length of the base on a slight angle to give rigidity and to guide the front wheel into position. The wheel is then held in place by a Velcro strap attached to the front leg. TITLE: The Racing Wheelchair Stabilizer.
