---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a sensor-equipped bandage for longitudinal measurement of knee range of motion in individuals with knee injuries and/or disabilities. Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA in Stuttgart, Germany, have developed a system for gathering exact data on mobility in patients with knee injuries. They use a bandage that has an integrated bracket with sensors that measure the knee's range of motion. The main challenge was to develop with an accurately measuring device that does not cause inconvenience for the patient. They used lightweight materials and miniature sensors; angular measurement systems based on magnetic principles; and acceleration and rate of rotation sensors, recording range of motion, rotation and forces endured by the joint. Data can be transferred to a computer to visualize long-term trends. Depending on the injury and treatment, the system not only records the joint’s range of movement, but can also determine to what degree it rotates and what forces are acting upon it. The sensors observe movements and store data non-stop. This allows doctors to observe how the knee’s range of movement changes over time, so they can recognize trends and, where necessary, adjust the treatment. The various fittings for the sensor systems have been designed by the researchers not to restrict freedom of movement in any way, meaning patients do not even notice that their joint is being monitored.
