Miller honored for outdoors work with veterans

The County Journal - 1/13/2018

Darren Miller of Washburn was recently honored by the American Legion Post 90 and Veterans of Foreign Wars post 690 for his dedication to serving veterans through opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

The award reads: This commendation is presented in recognition for your outstanding service to veterans through outdoor sporting activities. Your commitment to veterans reflects the highest standards and traditions of veteran fraternal organizations and those who serve and support their purpose, mission and goals.

The award is signed by the American Legion Post 90 Commander Robert Kreinbring and VFW Post 690 Commander Jason Janecek.

In an effort to connect donated bear tags to Purple Heart recipients, Miller was invited to present his program to the Chequamegon Veterans organization last fall. Realizing the many benefits Miller's efforts are to veterans and injured veterans, a motion was made to donate funds to Miller and recognize his committment to veterans through the organization's award process.

In addition to participating as a guide for area veteran fishing outings, Miller started a hunting program that legally transfers donated black bear tags to Purple Heart recipients and then guides them on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to harvest a northern Wisconsin black bear. The program has enjoyed great success; Darren said he has made some amazing friendships through these hunting adventures.
