Mountain Wounded Warrior Tournament Action This Weekend At SUNY Canton Roos

St. Lawrence Plaindealer - 3/6/2018

The 6th annual Mountain Warrior Sled Hockey tournament will be held this weekend at the Roos House on the SUNY Canton campus. Six teams will be competing for the tournament crown on Sunday.

This year's teams include Ottawa, Kingston and Durham from Canada, Buffalo, Fort Drum, and a combined team from Syracuse/Albany and Vermont.

A full weekend of action gets underway Friday at 8 a.m. with games from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. The consolation game will be held Sunday at 9 a.m. with the puck to drop for the championship game at 10:30 a.m.

According to tournament coordinator Mark J. McKenna, two past Paralympians will be competing - Paul Schaus (2014 gold medal at Sochi) playing on the Buffalo team, and Tyrone Delany (2014 bronze medal at Sochi) skating on the Ottawa squad. Also, there will be a legally blind player on the Durham team will return to Canton. Brett (no last name) and his father Mike who communicates via a head set and receiver on Brett's helmet, scored his first goal on the Fort Drum team last year.

"There are many athletes with varying disabilities but are truly amazing sled(ge) hockey players," Mr. McKenna stated. "We have made a lot of friends on both sides of the border, but we need more people to come out and watch these men and women play an adaptive sport of sled(ge) hockey."

Admission is free but donations will be taken at the door. On Saturday, from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m., there will be a clinic to help teach disabled kids how to play sled hockey.

"We want to thank SUNY Canton, VFWs and all the local businesses that have supported us through the years," Mr. McKenna added.
