Join cities across Texas to celebrate the first official Women Veterans Day in Texas

Mesquite News - 5/20/2018

State Representative Victoria Neave (D ? HD 107 Dallas, Garland, Mesquite), author of legislation to designate June 12 as Women Veterans Day in Texas, is partnering with the Veteran Women's Enterprise Center to co-host a Dallas-area celebration of Women Veterans Day on the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Women Armed Services Act on June 12, 1948.

"Here in our great State of Texas, we have the highest number of women veterans of any state in the country-over 177,000 women veterans live and work in our communities," said Neave. "Women Veterans sacrificed for us and I was honored to be able to pass this legislation with the help of women veterans who traveled across the state to testify in support of the legislation so that we can honor their contributions and sacrifices."

Neave and the Veteran Women's Enterprise Center are partnering with the City of Dallas and Dallas County to host a "Morning Formation" event at the Dallas City Hall Flag Room from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on June 12. She will also host an evening reception honoring women veterans at the VFW 6796, located at 9179 Garland Rd., Dallas from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 12. To participate or support this effort, please contact Katy.Womble@house.texas.gov. RSVP to the events at Dallaswomenveteransdayevents@gmail.com.

June 12, marks the first official Women Veterans Day in Texas. Veteran organizations across Texas, including Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and additional cities are working with elected officials, city, state and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and businesses to plan a series of events that will educate, validate, and commemorate the contributions of women who have served and are currently serving in the U.S. military.

During the 85th Legislative Session, State Representative Victoria Neave filed House Bill 2698 to designate June 12th as Women Veterans Day in Texas. The language of this bill was added on as an amendment to Senate Bill 805, which was signed into law. June 12th was selected as the day to celebrate Women Veterans Day because the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, which is the law that allowed women to serve as regular members of the military, was enacted on June 12, 1948.
