The Posture Monitor is a biofeedback device designed to support individuals who have a limited physical control and difficulty maintaining appropriate posture due to neurological deficits. Its purpose is to promote attention given to maintaining proper trunk alignment by individuals seated in wheelchairs, thus encouraging a seated position that offers greater functionality; enhances learning, self esteem, and mobility; and improves physiological factors such as respiration, circulation and digestion. The Posture Monitor is an electronic system featuring a built in microcontroller with on board timer and 128K RAM memory; a dual axis tilt sensor that attaches to the back of the user's shirt; user recordable digital voice prompts and private earphone; raido controlled remote tilt alert device; and support software for logging posture data in real time for later uploading and analysis on a host PC. It is housed in a small plastic case that easily fits in a wheelchair backpack. Multiple auditory prompt/feedback options are available to record and play back tones, music and/or verbal praise or commands and to activate lights, tactile patches, or other signaling devices. The critical tilt angle for voice prompting is adjustable from 5 to 45 degrees. After an adjustable time delay from 10 to 90 seconds without the user self-rightening, the remote alert worn on the teacher or caregiver's belt vibrates to signal unobtrusively the user's need for attention and upright positioning. POWER: Built in Ni-Cad rechargeable batteries provide up to five continuous hours of operation.
