DO IT YOURSELF ENTRY" ----- PURPOSE: To assist individuals with low vision or blindness in running track events in competition. A rope was stretched the length of the lanes the runners would use and a short piece of PVC pipe was threaded on to each rope, with the pipe being able to move freely along the rope. Volunteers were stationed approximately 15 feet apart to hold the rope at waist level. During the race, the runner holds the pipe, allowing it to glide on the rope to guide him/her down the lane. The volunteers held the rope taut until the runner approached; the rope was released momentarily as the runner passed by. At the end of the lane, a volunteer rang a bell to signal the end of the lane and the finish line. MATERIALS: Rope, PVC pipe, and a bell. SKILLS REQUIRED: Measuring and cutting. AUTHOR: Jordan, P.
