Sony’s STW-C140GI Entertainment Access Glasses with Audio

Sony’s STW-C140GI Entertainment Access Glasses with Audio is a wearable closed captioning device for cinema goers who are deaf or hard of hearing. These Entertainment Access Glasses work with the STW-C140X Receiver Box and the STWA-C101 Data Transmitter (the latter is sold separately, please see separate entry). The Receiver Box, which comes with the captioning glasses, receives closed caption data from a digital cinema server by the Data Transmitter. It then transmits the data to the captioning glasses via a radio frequency and utilizes holographic technology to display the captions. The user will see closed caption text overlaid on the cinema screen in real-time, which they can read as he watches the movie, regardless of where they are seated in the auditorium. And the subtitles, which are displayed in 31 characters by three lines in green text, are for the user’s viewing eyes only.

The Receiver Box is also equipped with an audio assist function, which serves two purposes: It can provide users who are hard of hearing with sound amplification without displaying captions, or audio descriptions for cinema goers who are blind or have low vision. In either case, the user just has to connect third-party headphones to the Receiver Box. The Receiver Box outputs only to one device at a time - either to Entertainment Access Glasses or headphones.
