Technical Specifications:

Step 1: Materials. To make this scrabble board you need:

  • foam board 51 centimeters by 51 centimeters as board
  • foam board 25 centimeters by 25 centimeters for letters (2.5 centimeters by 2.5 centimeters)
  • instant adhesives
  • two different sizes of beads
  • tweezers
  • iron rods Ø1 mm (32 rods)
  • black and blue marker
  • wood shelves ( 2x 51 centimeters long, 2x 53 centimeters long)
  • piece of wood ( 2 centimeters by 2 centimeters) for the exact place of the braille
  • stanley knife
  • ruler
  • cutting pliers
  • round nose pliers

Step 2: Foam board itself. On the board (51 centimeters by 51 centimeters) the holes for the iron rods must be created. You start at 1.5 centimeters from the side and then a hole every 3 centimeters. When you're finished there are 16 holes on each side.

Then you make all 32 iron rods 50 centimeters long. Each end of a rod has to be bend 90 degrees. Then you put the ends of the rods in the holes. When all the iron rods are in the right position, you can put a little bit of the instant adhesives between the crossings. This will make the iron robs more stable, so the blind person can feel where to put the letters.

Step 3: The letters. Of the other foam board you cut the letters. Each letter block is 2.5 by 2.5 centimeters. First you draw the lines and then you cut them into pieces with the stanley knife. With a black marker, write the letters on the blocks.

Step 4: Braille. First you make a mold of wood. The mold is made as large as a letter. In the mold there are 6 holes, so that each letter has the same distance between the beads. With a pencil you make dots where the beads have to come.

With the largest beads you make the Braille on the letters, with the smaller beads you indicate how many points that letter is worth. Those little beads are on the bottom of each letter. You need 295 big beads and 225 little beads.

Step 5: Scrabble board. On the diagonals of the board are the black and blue colored squares. Blue squares stands for double letter points, black squares stands for double word points. The center of the board is indicated with a black cross and on the top and bottom side there are small beads for the blind people.
