Simple Coin Sorting

Simple Coin Sorting is a do it yourself activity designed for children with learning disabilities teach place value, learn that coins have value, identify differences and similarities between coins, develop fine motor skills, sort/match, and use a legend/key.

Technical Specifications: 

Step One: Gather materials:

  • Empty Container with a Plastic Lid
  • Coins (1, 5, 10, and 25 cents)
  • Scissors 
  • Permanent marker
  • Paper
  • Tape

Step Two: Make four rectangles ("coin slots") on top of the lid (off to the right-hand side).

Step Three: Use the permanent marker to add labels on the right-hand side of the paper (= $0.01, = $0.05, = $0.10, = $0.25).

Step Four: Use the scissors to cut out the four rectangles. It’s easier if you fold the plastic lid.

Step Five: Tape the coins appropriately to the left-hand side of the paper, creating a legend or key for the value of each coin.

Step Six: Label each slot ($0.01, $0.05, $0.10, $0.25).
