The Gas Powered Power Wheels is a Do It Yourself product designed for children with lower extremity disabilities to engage in gross motor play. The short explanation is that it is a 7 horsepower Duromax with stage one racing kit. With a centrifugal clutch running to a custom driveshaft to the back running a 6 speed 90 degree mounted reversed rotation transaxle. Lawn tractor frame shortened 11 inches. With custom steering column and column shifted, hand brake, homemade gas pedal from a 2-hole punch.

Step One: The Short Video Version.

The video (below) is the shortened build video. The rest of this write up will be more in depth.

Step Two: The Original Build.

The original machine was made on a Modern Tool and Die Company lawn tractor frame with the drive shaft above the tractor frame. This caused the floorboard of the machine to be very high and any child over the age of 5 can drive with knees sticking up.

Step Three: Collecting Parts.

Going bigger was a major goal for this example. For this product, the user finds a ford raptor f150 power wheel. The wheelbase on it is 10 inches longer than the original machine. The frame donor this time needed to be stronger. The user finds a channel frame Murray. The steering in it is simple and parts are not hard to find. This is the cheap part.

Next, a 7 horsepower Duromax with an electric start along with a clutch and chain.

Step Four: Down to the Frame.

The point here is to rip everything but the steering off. Everything else is spare parts or going to change. Also, at this point, the power wheels are torn down to nothing but a shell.

Step Five: It Goes the Wrong Way!

As the video will explain the stock rotation of the MST206 transaxle is the wrong direction for this build. But with a bit of grinding and a bit of welding, the user can change that.

Step Six: Wheel Base Setup.

The user will see the wheelbase on a lawn tractor is 11 inches too long to fit in the wheel wells of the power wheels and the stock 17 horsepower Briggs engine would have stuck out the grill by a solid 2 or 3 inches.

Step Seven: Stage 1 Kit.

The reality is the stock carb setup with stock intake could have worked, but why not?

Step Eight: When 3 Make 1.

Put the reverse rotation transaxle and the stage 1 engine together and give it a test drive on the sand.

Step Nine:

It needs to be faster, so work on a clutch gear upgrade. If the user goes from an 11 tooth to a 14 they should gain 3 to 5 miles per hour in 6th gear.

The rear needs a tow hitch of some kind.

Every off-road truck needs a winch. A 2000-pound winch mounted just under the bumper with a 1-inch square stock bumper to hold the fairlead.

To go with that it needs upgraded brakes. There is no solution here listed.
