ScanTell is a voice output bar code reader designed for use by individuals who are blind or have low vision. This system identifies and speaks the names of bar-coded products, including retail products and personal items that have been bar coded at home. Bar code labels on work, personal, or retail items are input via a bar code scanner. The items are then located in a cross-referenced, relational database, and the description of each successfully identified item is output using voice synthesizer software and hardware. The system employs audible user prompts and requires minimal keyboard usage. The system consists of a bar code scanning module, a database application, and a speech systhesizer. OPTIONS: System components (scanner, database software, and speech synthesizer) may be purchased separately. COMPATIBILITY: For use on IBM and compatible computers. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Windows 95 or MS-DOS operating system.
