CLEMSON -- Eddie Williams must have been looking down at Memorial Stadium with a smile on his face.

His son, Clemson freshman wide receiver E.J. Williams, switched his jersey number from 6 to 39 for Saturday afternoon's game against Pitt to honor his late father on Military Appreciation Day. The elder Williams was a U.S. Army veteran who rose to the title of Sergeant First Class. He died at age 39 after serving nearly two decades.

E.J. Williams caught a 5-yard touchdown pass, the first of his college career, to give Clemson a 7-0 lead.

The Tigers went to Williams on their first snap of the game, but it was incomplete as there appeared to be some miscommunication between Williams and quarterback Trevor Lawrence. But they hooked up on the next possession for the touchdown.

Williams help set up another score on Clemson's next possession as he caught a 32-yard pass from Lawrence, leading to a 46-yard field goal by B.T. Potter as the Tigers went in front, 10-0.

Coming into the game, Williams had 12 catches for 143 on the season. He was a standout and Central High in Phenix, City, Alabama, where he had 84 receptions for 1,407 yards and 19 touchdowns in his final two seasons.
