Stonington holding fundraisers for veterans' monument

The Day - 11/21/2021

Nov. 21—STONINGTON — The town and the Harley P. Chase Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1265 in Pawcatuck have so far raised $64,000 of the $180,000 they need to create a granite monument on the front lawn of the police station that will honor the more than 7,000 residents who have served in the military since World War I.

The group of volunteers working on the memorial has planned two additional fundraisers, the first of which is scheduled for Wednesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Saltwater Farm Vineyard on Route 1A. Items donated by local businesses will be raffled off during an event, which will feature music by Dan Watson.

From Wednesday through Dec. 16 the town will be selling "Special Experience" raffle tickets.

People can visit or call Town Hall at (860) 535-5050 to enter for a chance to win one of three experiences donated to support the monument. Cash, check or credit cards are accepted and the winners will be drawn Dec. 17 at noon. The three experiences are an overnight stay for two at the Ocean House in Watch Hill with breakfast (a $900 value), a plane flight for two to Block Island and a dinner at Winfield's or the Yellow Kittens (a $350 value) or an overnight stay for two at the Whaler's Inn in Mystic, with a credit at the Shipwright's Daughter restaurant (a $350 value).

The town and VFW are working with Buzzi Memorial on Route 1 on the design and construction of the monument. Residents will be able to use smartphones or computers to read through the names of all veterans. More information about the project can be found at https://www.stonington-ct.gov/selectmens-office/pages/stonington-veterans-monument-project.

A sign on the police station lawn illustrates the progress of the fundraising. Planning for the project began in January 2020.
