Fundraising Walk for Veterans held Sept. 25 in Sylvan Lake

Red Deer Advocate - 9/8/2022

A Canadian Walk for Veterans will be held Sept. 25 in Sylvan Lake.

The national fundraising walk is being held to support veterans and first responders. Organizers call it "an opportunity to walk shoulder to shoulder with veterans and thank them while they are still among us."

The walk in Sylvan Lake goes from noon to 3 p.m. (registration is at 11 a.m.) from Centennial Park.

It's being hosted by Veterans Voices of Canada/Flags of Remembrance, whose mission is to honour past and present veterans through historical documentation, tributes and displays. Founder Al Cameron is capturing veterans' stories through video interviews to create a historical archive. Net proceeds from the walk will be used to help fund these activities.

Two years of COVID-19 has taken a toll on many military, veteran and first responder organizations that rely on fundraising to support their work of providing support through rehabilitation services and helping develop the tools needed to cope. Therefore, some of this year's net proceeds will also go to organizations that form a team and hold a Canadian Walk For Veterans event in their respective towns.

A major portion of net funds raised in the 2022 Canadian Walk For Veterans will also go to the True Patriot Love Afghan Resettlement Fund.
